Inspired by a Blossom Bush

Today is a Monday. Monday mornings for me equate to groaning and procrastination. Today was no different. Though when I think about it now, I don't know why I insist on starting out my day like that. Yes, I must leave the warm embrace of my jellyfish-printed sheets and face the Sisyphean school day, but why does it have to be that way? Why do I make it repetitive? The school work might be repeating but that doesn't have to determine my day.

I feel like many, if not most, college students get into this state of mind where it's just another day, just another math problem, just another glazed walk to class. Complaining has become a trend. Everyone's doing it. Misery loves company. I followed through with that way of thinking this morning. Woke up at 7:30, played Two Dots on my phone till 8, finally got out of bed, picked at blackheads and put on makeup, got breakfast, and walked to ballet class which started at 9. I went through the motions until I forced myself to stop on the way back from class and look at this bush of pink blossoms. It was displaying its bright colors under a softer pink blossom tree and next to vibrant yellow daffodils. I hadn't noticed the bush before. Spring has been popping out of the ground and I have been missing it! How long has that bush been there ignored? Mesmerized, I took out my iPhone to capture the beauty.

When I turned around, a woman we behind me with her iPhone doing the same thing. We laughed and marveled at the flowers. And just like that our day was different than the others before. We made a connection we wouldn't have made if we just kept walking. This is what made me smile genuinely for the first time today...maybe even in the last two days sadly. What's wrong with this picture?

So here is my belated New Year’s resolution...make it my Chinese New Year's Resolution since that's closer:

Make every day count.

I want my head to explode with positive memories, not stressful thoughts. I need to find the flowers in each day. And to make sure I do, I'm starting this blog. It will help me to count my blessings.

This doesn't mean that I will allow myself to neglect my school work. There's still a general chemistry lab report that needs writing. My goal is to change my way of thinking. This should help my school work. Make every second count; live in the moment; absorb more and procrastinate less. That's the hope anyways.

Wish me good luck!

P.S. When I was talking pictures of these little Easter egg-colored flowers, another lady came up to me and started talking with me about the ones that were purple with orange middles. She said they reminded her of a lesson she used to teach in her home economics class in which she discussed the soothing effect of opposing colors and how it is a common phenomenon in nature. I learn something new every day.
